Been crocheting forever but still not good
My mom taught me to crochet when i was probably about 8 years old. lately (the past five years) i have been doing it non stop. the problem is, sometimes i have a hard time following a pattern or understanding how to do new stitches. So i always read over the patterns, and as soon as i see a stitch i don't know, i walk away, sometimes very disappointed. i would love to make clothing or hats, but i can only do flat things, you know, scarves and blankets. Now don't get me wrong, my blankets are very nice, but I think that most of my crocheting is self taught so maybe I am doing it wrong. maybe that is why i cannot follow a pattern. and the words that explain complicated stitches seem to just confuse me more.
any advice or has anyone been through this themselves?

I think you may be too hard on yourself. I also think a class would be very helpful. Are there any near you? If not, check out some books, on-line instructions, or on-line videos to see if you are crocheting the way most people do and for help on new stitches.
I felt the same way for a loooooooong time!
But I just keep at it. I keep getting the books and DVDs from our local library.
Even though I have a hard time with patterns, I haven't given up. Rather I switched the types of things I was making.
Now I make a lot of jewelry using crochet thread. :-)
I want to make some booties for a cousin's baby shower but I know my history with patterns. So I searched long and hard and I found a pattern that makes the booties in two flat panels that are sewn together rather than crocheted around.
You might also want to check a website called MeetUp.com to see if there are any crochet groups meeting in your area. People are always willing to help. :-)

Yikes, I had typed a few things, went into where I keep some info on crochet, and lost what I said.
OH well.
www.crochetnmore.com123basics.htm has stitches and explantions. I don't know if this will help. www. about.com has info on crochet, knitting etc. www.youtube.com has videos. you put in what you want, and most of the times a few videos will come up. I hope something that we suggest will help you.
craftee.bliss, where did you find your easy booties pattern, I have a friend who is looking for an easy one.
Thank you in advance.
Happy Hooking to both of you,
mdr
I just saw on one of the forums that tomorrow Sept. 12 is--Internation Crochet Day
