Any sock noobs want to crochet with me?
I have never crocheted a pair of socks. I'm terribly jealous of all the funky socks that knitters get to make, so I bought "Crocheted Socks - 16 Fun-to-Stitch Patterns".
I'm planning on making Easy Does It. That's the first pattern in the book. I'm not buying the recommended yarn, so the first thing I need to know is what is commonly available that is comparable to what's listed: Meilenweit Cotton (45% cotton, 42% wool, 13% nylon). I've been looking for awhile and I've never seen yarn in the stores that has nylon in it. I'm also concerned because they don't list the "thickness" of that yarn. Is that called the "weight". Do you guys think I could get away with using Wool-Ease?
I hope there's a least one other crocheter out there that's in the mood for socks...

I'd love to join you but I don't have the book and I buried myself in other projects. I tried making socks once before using a toe-up pattern from this site and had a horrible time with the toe increases! Later I read, eh, just wing it, but by then my perfectionist self had ripped it out. Good luck to you.
I looked up your yarn on Google, and it's a fingering/sock weight, real skinny, while Wool-Ease is a worsted, so unless the pattern is a guideline sort to use with any yarn, no, you won't be able to substitute Wool-Ease. There were lots of entries, so you can buy it on-line. BTW, sock yarn commonly has nylon in it to delay wearing holes in the sock.
Yeah, I found it online too, but it was $7 a skein and the book says I need 3 balls of it!!! I'm just too cheap to pay $21 for a pair of socks... Well, that's not true. I wear kilt hose as socks with my long skirts and those are expensive, but they go over my knees so... worth it.
Are there any sock yarns out there that are $3/ball?
Oh, and you don't have to have the book. Any socks will do. As a matter of fact, I just found a pattern on this site called the ultimate crocheted socks... or something like that. I just wanted someone else to make some socks with me. Do we have to use the exact same pattern on this forum? Whoops.

It was the ultimate socks that stopped me! I'd like to give it another go sometime.
I often, mostly, order yarn over the internet. There are LOTS of good stores, but I'm drawn to www.knitpicks.com See those pretty multi-colored wood needles? She doesn't offer wood hooks, grr.
www.elann.com has a lot of cute, free patterns, mostly knits of course, and relatively inexpensive yarn.

I'll have to wait, since I made a pact with my husband not to start any new projects until the many I have on the go are done. Or at least one of them... ah... wouldn't it be a surprise for him to find the shrug I started yesterday and spent over 6 hours working on cause I was (and still am) sick with a bad cold and can't perform any other sort of task...
Anyway, I've looked at a whole lot of patterns for crocheted socks, and all of them seem to be quite thick. I'm still hoping to find one that ends in a nice thin sock without too much yarn bunched up in the toe and heel. I've been thinking about asking my mom to show me (yet again) how to knit so I can knit socks instead...

DON'T LEARN TO KNIT!!! Don't go to the dark side! THEY want you to think that you need to knit to make socks! Crochet needs us to prove to the world that you can make beautiful, functional things with crochet. It's an abominable conspiracy, I tell you!

Grr and bah on my other projects. I want something small and relatively fast, so I'd like to join you if you're not all done by now. I'll make the Ultimate Socks from this site except I think I'll do the toe as an after thought toe so I can rip out and replace if it gets holey.
Knitting has one advantage in sock making. You can knit two socks at the same time on a circular needle using the Magic Loop method - the needle does the looping, not the yarn as in starting a crochet motif - but I don't know how to avoid second sock syndrome in crochet except by alternately working sock 1 then sock 2 then sock 1 then...

It's not too late. At least I'm still just starting. Your site looks good. I decided to pass on the Ultimate Socks because the heel looked more complex than I wanted to tackle for now. I'm doing "Toe up socks that fit", much simpler, from http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30412 I've completed the increases on one toe, started the second toe, and dropped both for a bit to get back to Eva's Shawl, lol. I want to do both socks at the same time to avoid having an orphan sock with a never finished mate. I'm using sock yarn and a 4.0mm hook.
Already there's a difference in the two socks. I finally realized that when you slip stitch back on the starting chain, you do so on the bottom bumps not on the back loops. Misleading directions in some patterns. HTH

I have been afraid to start my first pair of crocheted socks by myself, but I'd love to jump in with someone else! I have to search and find me a pattern first though, but let me know when you're starting.
After last year's debacle with me trying to make the Ultimate Socks from crochetme, this year I got all determined and I finished a pair! The pattern was not very easy to navigate (there are some errata in the comments at the end of the pattern, please could someone edit the original to make it easier for sock newbies?), but once I got them figured out and did far too much frogging I got a really nice, warm, comfy and well fitting pair of socks. Hooray!
And I managed to get around the One Sock Syndrome by making 2 socks at the same time, first the toe on one then the toe on the other, then the foot on one and the foot on the other etc and so on. When I finished the last stitch on the last sock I just threaded the ends in and put them straight on, no sewing, no having to make another whole sock. Bliss!
I can't wait to start another pair, for my sister, then a pair for my daughter (once I can figure out how to diddle the pattern for a 6 year old foot) then some more for me. Persevere with this pattern if you can, if you can get through to the end your feet will be all cosy and grateful.
