Age to Start Learning

I have a 5-year-old and 3-year-old who want to crochet when I crochet, but I can't seem to even begin to teach them how. Does anyone have any good tips about teaching young children to crochet?

For those of you who learned to crochet as children, what age were you? Is there anything particular you remember about the experience?

At that age, they love to make chains. When I was 9 I loved the mesh stitch - dc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, etc - because it covered a lot of ground quickly.

My Mom taught me to crochet by using my fingers to crochet long chains of thread..I was about 7 or 8.. I would finger crochet a long long chain rip it out and do it all over again. Good start lol since the chain stitch is usually the foundation of the item being made. Of course yarn is much easier to handle then crochet thread is ...
Good luck-- that is great they want to be crafty at such a early age..
