Advice on Crocheting a Cowl

Categorized As:

I am currently trying to make a cowl. The pattern I am using can be found at the following URL.

This pattern calls for making your chain and then slip stiching to join the chain into a circle. You then go on to you next row of single crochet.

My problem lies in that my circle keeps getting twisted somehow while I am crocheting that first row. Is there a tool or trick that can help me keep the chain straight while I'm working on it?

mad for crochet!
Hey there sachs10, I remember that used to happen to me too- grr! What I do now is - instead of joining the circle when you finish chaining, turn and sc up the chain and then make your circle by slip stitching to your first sc. You might want to check out the foundation sc method too

Ha, I was just going to suggest that, too, so there's two votes. Leave enough tail when you begin to close up the tiny slit as you weave the end in.

I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly I should make my chain and then start on my first row of sc and finish it and then join to form a circle?

Yes.

Your first row will be wrong-side out, but that's very minor aesthetically when compared to a twisted chain.

To avoid that, make a foundation single crochet. Google, fsc is explained somewhere.

Either way, you have a fatter beginning that is easier to join into a ring without twisting.

Thanks for your help! I went to YouTube last night to see if I could figure out the sc foundation as I am definitely a visual learning. I couldn't quite get it so I just did my chain and then a row of sc and that did the trick.

I did just find this video on YouTube that I think will help me learn how to do the sc foundation for next time.

Thanks so much!
