Fat Kitty

Introduction

Fat Kitty Amigurumi

After being introduced to amigurumi by this fabulous ‘zine, I went out and bought Japanese pattern books and played with making them. I then was asked to teach an Amigurumi class at my LYS’s annual Knit & Crochet retreat. I created this pattern for my class and it was so much fun to make and teach.

Materials List

  • Fat Kitty CatYarn requirements & hook size are dependent on the weight of the yarn you choose to use. You want your stitches to be as tight as possible so stuffing does not leak out. You may need to use a hook size smaller than what is recommended on the yarn label.
  • Yarn needle
  • Poly-fil or other stuffing
  • Cat eyes (Optional. If you can’t find these at your local independent craft store you can buy them on eBay for very cheap.)
  • Stitch marker

Finished Size

Depends on yarn weight.

Gauge

Gauge is unimportant in this pattern. Be sure to make your stitches tight. Use a smaller hook than recommended, if necessary.

With yarn needle and yarn, sew ears to head in desired position. Before finishing stuff ears with filling.

If you are using store-bought eyes that require you fasten them inside head do so before sewing head to body. Sew head to body in desired position, stuffing before finished.

Sew legs to front of body at the point where they lay flat to the ground. If desired you can sew one leg crossing the other by sewing one slightly above the other and sewing it to the top of the other leg.

Sew tail in desired position and coil around front, sewing it in place.

My mom has a fat cat too, so I made one of these and made it to look like her cat. I changed the pattern slightly. I also had a heck of a time finding eyes. Since I was running low on time, we just went to Goodwill, bought a cheapo stuffed animal with perfect sized eyes and cut them off and put them on the cat. We stitched up the other toy and gave it to the dogs ^.^ You can see pictures of my fat cat by clicking the link below.

Jennifer,

This cat is just great! The cat in the photo also reminds me of my step-mom's cat Spencer. He's 18lbs!! I think she may be getting one of these "little" fellows soon!! :) Great work!

This is perfect! We have a house of eight fat cats; I'm so making one of these in light blue for my nephew-to-be!

After all, every kid needs a slightly fuzzy light blue stuffed amigurumi kitty, right? Otherwise he may grow up *shudder* normal!

He's so cute. He reminds me so much my cat, Cornhusker, that died.

You're fulfilling your mission! I'm a knitter (although my first needlepoint project way back when was crochet) who is going to give this delicious kitty a try. My good friend's beloved cat just died, and I want to make her an arigurumi that looks like the late, "Goo." Thank you!

Thanks so much. When our big black Fred died back in May, I didn't know how to deal with our loss. Though he was my parents' cat for the past eight years, he was OUR cat (Mom and Dad and Mike and me) and brother for nine years before then. My parents had him by their side in his last days, and have built a little shrine for his ashes. My brother got to see Fred at the vet to see him off on his way to Cat-Heaven. But I had none of that, for I live 400 miles away. So I made a Fred, to keep my parents company when they miss him most... but mostly so I could say to him my own goodbyes. By the grace of an I-hook, two balls of Moda Dea Eden, and some leftover Red Heart Super Saver, Fred came back to me for one more purr. You may never know how much it meant to all of us, so thank you so much.

I just learnt about amigurumi a little while ago. I am a beginner, but i think i can make this. I live in Jamaica where you can hardly find the proper yarn and hook to crochet. People do crochet down here, but they're usually elderly women who only crochet doilies. I can't wait to make this. I LOVE AMIGURUMI !!!
