Hypothetically: If You Could Ask Joss Whedon One Crafty Question...

Categorized As:

What would it be? Let me know by 5PM Pacific Standard Time tomorrow (Thursday, 13th November 2008).

If I—*cough* "hypothetically"*—have a chance, I'll pick one or two to ask.

* I don't consider anything to be certain, and that's all I'll say about it. If you leave comments asking me questions, I may or may not answer them. If you'd like some context for this post, read this.

Did you ever expect the craft community's response to Jayne's hat?

Do you have a crafter in your family?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for the interview.

If he considers any of his characters to be closet crocheters, knitters, weavers, etc., and who that would be?

My fingers are equally crossed, and a fangirly squeal is being held in check!

In a debate between Spike and Angel, who would argue the side of knitting, who would argue the side of crocheting, and why?

My daughter is squeeing at the thought that her question might be asked.

What's your chest measurement, and do you like your sweaters baggy or fitted?

Ummmm...

Would a knitting needle or a crochet hook work better to kill a vampire?

Ummmm...

Did Cynthia Bergstrom design all those awesome sweaters Willow used to wear in early seasons, or were they off the rack?

"What are your preconceived notions about crocheters, and how has this interview (and the lobbying done to get this interview) changed them?"

Also posted at your other home:

A few questions, which I know goes against the whole "if you could ask one question":

Is Joss the craft-friendly one on his crew or is it someone else who sneaks things in? And if it is him, is there something specific he sees for a scene or setting? (I ask because as a props person on a few plays in college, I remember being asked by directors to do some needlepoint on a hideous towel and some knitting and crocheting.)

Could Joss have predicted that Jayne's cunning hat would be a cultural icon when the scene was written and filmed? Was there some other crafty item from his projects that he would have expected an equivalent fan reaction to?

As writing is a craft, what do you see in the work habits and/or creativity of knitters/crocheters/spinners/weavers, that you think chimes with your experiences building characters, scripts and working partnerships with other creative people? Of course, being a showrunner isn't like holding a quilting bee, but then again....

Wouldn't it have made sense for Buffy to be a crocheter or knitter? The tools are pointy and often made of wood and when they fall out of your purse no one looks at you funny. Ok, maybe a little funny but not weird-stake-girl funny.

Any plans for iconic fiber items in Dollhouse? We (the rabid fan base) would like to get a head start on our next project.

Do you ever plan on setting one of your shows somewhere cold enough for the characters to wear a lot of knitting and crochet?

My second question would be word association:
Knitter
Merino
Yarn
Sock
Qiviut

Fingers crossed! Hope this all works out!

"Are Captain Hammer's sweater vests knit or crochet?" Good luck! :)

I'd love to hear his thoughts on the issues talked about in this article about the resurgence of the DIY movement within the context of the crafting community and whether the same thing could realistically be extended to the entertainment industry with more DIY projects like Dr. Horrible.

How would you feel about making Buffy Season 9 into a giant Nextgen videogame for PS3 and Xbox360?

You could also make each issue of the comic downloadable through xboxlive or Playstation Network everymonth.

noricum's question is pretty close to my own. it does strike me on repeated viewings of Buffy and Firefly that handmade fibery items like Jayne's hat or the crocheted afghans in Willow and Buffy's bedroom (omg, i sound like such a fangeek) are positioned in a sort of cozy, homey, made-with-love-by-mamma/grandma way -- although, and this is important, not in a derogatory way. (i.e., Jayne's hat isn't silly because it's fugly, it's silly because it's so not Jayne, and yet it is, and therein the hat becomes everything we need to know about Jayne and no, i haven't thought about this all that much, why do you ask?) All the same, it does seem as though the yarn crafts are represented as a maternal older person's thing, not a young person's thing, that one does because one simply cannot live without the cast of Firefly in amigurumi form.

ANYWAY. My question is along the lines of "how has this -- the grassroots lobbying to get this interview -- changed your impressions of crocheters and knitters, or has it at all? had you been aware of the massive numbers of Whedoncrafters before this?"

In this hypothetical scenario, Mal, Kaylee, Anya, Buffy, Lorne, and Gauis Baltar(why?... cause) are all magically transported to an alternate dimension by a chaos demon. Once there, they are forced(some more than others) to engage is a lengthy and quite visually pleasing orgy. What fabric of bed spread should the chaos demon use to best accommodate the various character's preferences in this scenario?

Do you think there is room in the Evil League of Evil for a crafter?

Does Jayne know how to knit, and if he doesn't, would he ask his mom to teach him?

Kaylee + granny square afghans. Y/N? (seriously, I could see her bunk being covered with granny square afghans)

Which character would be most likely to gift something hand-made to a loved one?

Joss,

It seems as though one of the important aspects of your brand of feminism is that you let women be women: Buffy can be strong and still wear fashionable boots, for example.

Do you have an opinion on the place of the new domesticity in modern feminism? (Are you aware of the new domesticity?)

Did Buffy ever learn what a tea cozy is?

Lobe,

Please, will you let us make things for any of your upcoming projects? Sweaters, hats, voodoo dolls, anything!

And, BTW, who actually did make Jayne's hat?
