Buffy, Willow, Crochet: Discuss
A wee something to tide you over till the issue's ready (warning - Buffy geekdom below):
Last night we finished watching season 4 of Buffy. A good friend once told me that season 4 could be skipped entirely on account of its wacky fluffiness. Now, although I did come to loathe Riley for all his blandness, and although I don't think the Initiative was developed well enough nor executed in any compelling way (lots of missed potential for social and political commentary), I do think the season was worth watching. If for no other reason than the development of the Giles, Anya, Spike and Willow characters. That said, I'm giddy for season 5, as I'm promised it's a doozy.
Now, the crochet. In seasons 1 and 2 Buffy slept on a thread crochet pillow sham. This, to me, seemed akin to sleeping on a bed of nails. The sham was beautiful, as were, I imagine, the lines on poor Sarah Michelle Geller's cheeks every time she lifted her face off that thing.
Much to my glee, Willow had a ripple afghan at the end of her bed throughout season 4. She also wears a granny square cardigan in one of the final episodes of that season. Willow's character has been victim from the series premiere of interesting wardrobe choices. They're so quirky as to have become iconic in my mind. She's worn lots of yarn barf in the first few seasons. And lots of crochet. Crochet even when it wasn't in style in real life. I don't necessarily think it was good fashion, but my hook sense is constantly tingling watching this show. There was also a cameo appearance by at least one thread crochet bedspread.
Talk amongst yourselves.

I too have loved all of the amazing crochet on my favorite shows : Buffy, Angel and Firefly. Last night, watching Firefly, I found myself wishing the camera would follow River around some more so I could try to figure out her cool vest!! Does Joss Whedon crochet? I love to crochet to his shows. It's the perfect combination, both activities being obsessions!
mad for crochet!
oops, my comment ended up on top. I swear, I am not trying to cut in line.
Ooh, I just watched that Firefly the other day, and was thinking the same thing!
(The comment-ordering quirk is from our switcheroo a few months ago. :)
Check out Interweave Crochet and the Crochet Me book!
This is funny. I may have to rent these programs if for no other reason than to view the crochet parade. Interesting.
Who said season 4 was skippable? Hellllooooo, "Hush"?! Though I do agree about Riley. And the big bad this season wasn't nearly as well developed as the Mayor (S3 is my fave). Oh, wait...this is a crochet blog. Sorry. Um, yay ripple afghan!
Ha! Yes, I agree about Hush. I said so here, even. Totally brilliant, that. I loved S3, too. Ok. Back to coding.
ditto all!!! hush and the musical episode, two of the best buffies ever.
the whole scene with the overhead projector...hilarious.
riley was a bit of a sad sap, but you have to admit it was awesome to see them go down the elevator in the frat house, and it turns out to be this crazy underground military lab!!! How cool is that????? [awkward sounds of geeking out]
I hadn't had my "crochet eyes" when I saw the episodes, must re-watch!!
Not entirely skippable, there are a few good episodes. I do love Buffy though. I did notice the ripple afghan but it fell on deaf ears because I am the only one of my friends who crochets. My roommates poke fun that I'm not to be bothered when I put Buffy in the dvd player and I am crocheting.
Now I'm going to have to watch Buffy all over again just for the crochet. Darn it.
I don't see how you could skip S4. You'd miss "Once more with Feeling" (the musical episode) and the whole Giles and Spike living together thing.
I think the only problem with Riley is the competition he's up against. Though TBH the only Buffy cast members I'd be chasing are Tony Head (Giles) and James Marsters (Spike).
I'm so glad someone else was thinking about that when they saw the crochet pillow shams! I was a little sad when I saw it, because it brought me out of the show, thinking "damn, that's going to be some nasty pillow-face in the morning".
(I just -last week- finished watching all the Buffy seasons on dvd - thank you zip.ca- I was a big Firefly fan, so I thought I'd check out what else that Whedon guy has done. ;> BTW, have you seen Firefly? River Tam has a neat crochet vest that's awesome, and Inara has a great black crochet shawl that looks kinda like spiderwebs, kinda like that "celebrity shawl" that was big news. I'd love to know how to make that.)
AAAAAH! Firefly, too! [more geeking sounds]
Amazing writing, premise, and pure Joss Whedon greatness. Once you get past the initial skepticism about a "Space Western???" it's fantastic. (I met Inara at a special screening of the Firefly movie! GEEEEEEK!)
To prove without doubt that I am a nerd (and my husband too), we're getting the buffy comic books that continue where s7 left off.
Maybe I'll crochet some pocket protectors to cement the deal.
