Crochet in the Yarn Market
Last year, Soho Publishing relaunched the trade magazine Yarn Market News (last seen in the '80s), geared mostly to retail shop owners, but also to other professionals in the crochet and knitting industry. One thing I love about the mag is its editorial commitment to online trends and content. Another thing I love is its upcoming focus on crochet. The more visible crochet becomes in high-quality, well-read publications, the more shops will hopefully get on the bandwagon to promote and support it. I'm very, very optimistic about this. The mag is only available to industry members (for free!), but it's a great read I highly recommend for all shop owners, designers, writers, and editors.
Full disclosure: I was interviewed for the upcoming feature story on crochet (along with a list of women I'm honoured to be included with), and I wrote an unrelated piece in the same issue.

It's great that crocheting is getting some nice props, and congtats to you for being in the article.
I'm glad my LYS owner is working to promote crochet in her shop. I'm glad to help, and think it takes well written patterns with good yarn to attract knitters.
wow, your name came up first on the list!
hey it looks like IK is coming out with 4 issues crochet issues a year now.
Get. Out.
cool! i'm excited that crochet is becoming more visible in the world!
sometimes it's fun to go into a yarn store and amaze the people who work there with what i'm crocheting since they don't know how to do it. but it is frustrating if i have any questions. all of the yarn stores near me are completely clueless about crochet. what can i do to open their eyes?
Great to see crochet finally getting the cred it deserves!
My mom is raving about all the spring 07 fashions back in England and Paris - she says crochet is very heavily featured in most of the top design houses. Although, she says there are a lot of crochet dresses - which those of us with big bums shudder at! lol.
However, this can only bode well for crochet (and dare I say knitting?) Wonder how long it will be before this trend hits mainstream USA/Canada?

Where can non-industry people (like us) read YMN?
It's not sold in stores, since it's a trade magazine. I don't think it's available to anyone but shop owners and other professionals. - Kim
For those of you who want to subscribe - just go to
WWW.YarnMarketNews.com and look for the 'subscribe' button. It's free. The form asks for your industry affiliation, but I suppose you could just check "other".
Remember, this is not a consumer magazine so there are no patterns or how-tos. But there are always new yarn and book reviews, updates from CGOA and TKGA, and often designer profiles, so if you are a fiber-junkie it is still a good read.
And full disclosure here too - I am the crazy person who WROTE the article on crochet :-) But this is not me shilling for the magazine, just trying to be helpful.
My local Waldenbooks does not carry even one crochet magazine. I have asked and complained about this for years. They have like 5 or 6 knitting mags, and tons of knitting books, but nothing--not one solitary thing, on crochet.
So glad that crochet is getting the recognition it deserves!!!! I am personally amazed that it has taken this long. Crochet is such a versatile art!
